Juniperus Communis

Description:

An evergreen shrub or tree, up to 20ft/6m high with bluish-green, narrow, stiff needles. It has small flowers and little round black berries.

Actions:

Antirheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antitoxic, aphrodisiac, astringent, carminative, cicatrizant, depurative, diuretic, emmenagogue, nervine, parasiticide, rubefacient, sedative, stomachic, sudorific, tonic, vulnerary.

Extraction:

The oil is extracted by steam distillation from the berries, needles or the wood.

Characteristics:

Juniper berry oil i a water-white or pale yellow, mobile liquid with a sweet, fresh, woody balsamic odour. It blends well with vetiver, sandalwood, cedarwood, galbanum, elemi, cypress, clary sage, pine, lavender, rosemary, benzoin, geranium and citrus oils.

Safety Data:

Nonsensitising, but may be slightly irritating. WARNING: This oil stimulates the uterine muscle (an abortifacient) and must not be used during pregnancy. If should not be used by those with kidney disease as it is nephrotoxic. It is not suitable for your children. Use in moderation.
