Valerian
Valeriana Officinalis
Description:
a perennial herb up to 5ft/1.5m high with a hollow, erect stem, deeply dissected dark leaves and many purplish-white flowers. It has short, thick grayish roots, showing above ground. These have a strong odour.
Actions:
Anodyne (mild, anti dandruff, antidiuretic, antispasmodic, bactericidal, carminative, depressant of the central nervous system, hypnotic, hypotensive, regulator, sedative, stomachic.
Extraction:
The oil is extracted by steam distillation from the roots.
Characteristics:
An olive to brown liquid, darkening with age, with a warm-woody, balsamic, musky odour. Fresh oils have a green top note. It blends well with patchouli, pine, lavender, cedarwood, mandarin, petitgrain and rosemary.

Safety Data:
Nontoxic, nonirritant, but can cause possible sensitisation. WARNING: In large amounts, valerian can cause headaches, mental agitation and delusions. Use in moderation and do not use over long periods of time (more then a month) without a break.
